Foreign tourists can rent a self drive car in Goa with their home country driving licence, an International Driving Permit (IDP), a passport and a valid visa. Get your IDP in your home country before you travel, because it generally cannot be arranged once you are in India. Carry all these documents whenever you drive.
Goa is one of the easiest places in India to explore by car. Distances are short, the beaches are spread out, and a car lets you reach forts, villages and quiet bays that tour buses miss. If you have never driven in India, though, there are some things worth knowing first.
Documents You Need
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Home country driving licence | Your original, valid licence |
| International Driving Permit | Translates and supports your licence in India |
| Passport | Identity check |
| Valid Indian visa | Confirms your stay |
| Security deposit | Confirmed at booking |
The driver must also meet our general rental terms: a minimum age of 20 years, and at least 1 year of driving experience. Send clear photos of your documents when you book, so that your handover goes quickly.
How Driving in Goa Differs from Home
- Keep left: Traffic in India drives on the left, and most rental cars have the steering wheel on the right.
- Horns are normal: A short beep usually means “I am here”, not anger.
- Expect scooters: They can pass on either side, so check your mirrors often.
- Watch for animals: Cows and dogs on the road are common.
- Night driving: Some village roads are dark, so take extra care after sunset.
- Roundabouts and junctions: Traffic may not always follow the order you expect, so slow down and stay alert.
If you are used to an automatic car, book one early. Left-hand gear changes take some getting used to if you normally drive on the right. Our automatic vs manual guide can help you decide.
Traffic Rules and Fines
Seat belts are required, phone use is not allowed while driving, and drink driving is punished severely. AI cameras now operate at many key junctions. Read our guide to Goa traffic rules and fines before your first drive.
Arriving in Goa
Most international visitors arrive at Dabolim or Mopa. After a long flight, you may prefer to have the car delivered to your hotel the next morning, particularly if you land late at night and have not driven in India before. Tell us your flight number, and we will suggest the best option.
Paying and Booking
Reserve your car by call or WhatsApp on +91 91049 12661. You pay a booking amount to hold it. Ask which payment methods are available for the balance and the deposit, as international cards may not work everywhere in Goa. It is a good idea to carry some cash for parking, fuel and small purchases.
